Our participation at the 2016 International Conference on Frontotemporal Dementias

From August 31 to September 2, 2016, clinicians and researchers from around the world met in Munich, Germany to present and discuss the newest findings on frontotemporal dementias at the 10th International Conference on Frontotemporal Dementias (ICFTD). The Penn FTD center was proud to participate!

The emphasis at the 2016 ICFTD was clear: biomarkers are essential for tracking disease progression in FTD and selecting patients for treatment trials.  Biomarkers, a shortened term for ‘biological markers’, refer to measurable indicators of a particular disease or physiological state. In FTD research, common biomarkers include brain imaging, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and genetics.

The Penn FTD Center’s Dr. David Irwin and Dr. Corey T. McMillan both spoke at the ICFTD and shared exciting new biomarker findings from our Center research. Dr. Irwin discussed how measurement of a protein called tau in CSF provides an in vivo marker of brain pathology in FTD. Dr. McMillan shared his work showing how information from the MOBP gene can relay information about certain types of FTD due to tau, including corticobasal syndrome (CBD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).

In addition, the Penn FTDC presented 18 scientific posters to share even more of our ongoing biomarker research. Clinical Research Coordinator Courtney Igne’s poster which highlighted the importance of caregivers’ attitudes towards biomarker research was included in a special Welcome Reception for FTD Caregivers.

The ICFTD and other scientific conferences allow the Penn FTDC to share our work and stay informed of exciting new clinical and research findings to better serve the FTD community.
